If there’s any group who simultaneously ruled hearts, minds, and asses in 2006, it would have to be Hot Chip. Their release, The Warning was refreshing regardless of how you classified it. Opening with the Richard D James-esque “Careful” the album wastes no time grabbing attention and never lets you walk away. Unlike many electronic based releases, The Warning never seems to get repetitive. It’s intelligent, quirky, lounge-y, pop-y, dance-y, and a whole lot of other -y’s… pick your own combo.
Another sign of a great album is when you can’t seem to pick a single. “Over and Over” was without a doubt the sure-fire dance anthem and is still being dropped overandoverandoverandover by deejays in every city. However, “Colours,” “And I Was A Boy From School,” and “The Warning” are all equally strong in their own right without having the assistance of the “it’s got a good beat and I can dance to it” mentality. Although… that mentality works too… it’s just not the sole factor.
In a day where music is becoming more and polarized… where you’re either “dance music” or “not dance music.” Hot Chip comes through with yet another release that shows that you can always bend the rules to your own liking.
