… or clone myself everything would be a lot easier. I can’t do either though, so I’m either going to make it through the next two weeks, or I’m going to die. However, in my preparations for Disco 2000, I found a long lost gem and that has given me renewed energy.
Back when Alan Braxe and Thomas Bangalter’s collaboration Stardust released “Music Sounds Better With You” was THE MOST EPIC SONG EVER on dance floors in 1998. Few thought it could really be improved upon. Yet, before the word mash-up was ever coined or blogs released 3,436 un-official remixes, there was always the “white label” to turn to when official remixes didn’t quite offer what you wanted.
White label’s were named appropriately because of their often plain white label and white sleeve. Sometimes they were the test pressings done in advance of an official pressing of a vinyl record. They were also often illegal bootlegs… unofficial remixes released in small batches by producers to record stores or radio stations. Rumors would abound of who did a white label. They were often the secret weapon that every DJ kept in their crates.
Some of my favorite songs of all times are white labels, but that’s another topic. Back to Stardust!
So… shortly after “Music Sounds Better With You” came out, a white label appeared that featured a remix of the song that added the vocals from Madonna’s Holiday. It was pure magic. It was one of those combinations that forever ruined both originals. I could no longer listen to one or the other without feeling like something was missing.
Tomorrow night I’ll be running three versions of the song. First, an edit of the original Chaka Khan that Stardust sampled, the white label, and then a new electro remake of the song. It should work out really nicely.

How much fun was it to make your own artwork and write code words on white labels so that fakers couldnt see what you were playing or steal your tracks? I think i still have a couple white labels tucked away somewhere. Nice Homage!
